Presidents Corner - January 2010

January Speaker

Our speaker for January was Mr. Ned Sanders, Chairman of the Houston County Board of Commissioners.  Mr. Sanders has had a most interesting life.  A native Georgian, graduate of both the Citadel and Air Force Academy, he served in many assignments with the USAF prior to retiring as an O-6.  Since then he has been active in many events promoting the welfare of Houston County.

Mr. Sanders presented a most interesting and informative discussion on current endeavors within the county.  Among the topics covered were: county population growth, new animal shelter, expanded detention facility, addition to the county health department, a new library, new Little League facilities, County Airport improvements, road projects and G-RAMP.

January Door Prize Drawing

Terry Paulk and John Hunter both missed getting the $175.00.

Robert Stock walked away with the $25.00 consolation prize as George DePuy wasn’t present to collect.

Mike Calloway won the special “History of EW – Volume III” prize provided by ITT.

Personnel Changes

Dixie Crow supporter and past advisor Colonel Tim Freeman will PCS to the Pentagon as Asst SECAF for Acquisition in March.  He will spend his last few days at Robins with us in our symposium golf tournament and at our Tuesday Plenary Session and Exhibitor Reception .

Tim will be replaced by Colonel Chris Davis currently commander of the A-10 Maintenance Group at Hill AFB.

Our advisor and friend, Colonel Stan VanderWerf is deploying to Iraq for 6 months as Chief of Air Force Operations, Baghdad.

Museum of Aviation EW Exhibit Assistance:

The Dixie Crows are working with the museum on a long term plan for the EW exhibit.  A lot of people are suggesting a basic history of EW, but I would like to tailor it more to stuff directly related to Robins.  The only problem is that I didn't get here until 1982 when it was well established.  It was suggested I find someone from when stuff moved from Ohio (Chantilly?, Gentilly? Didn't catch...) sometime in the 1960's.  But I would appreciate anyone who remembers anything from then, or even early 1970s, would to let me, Mike Hopf, at Michael.Hopf@robins.af.mil  know what they remember, or even what think they remember (my memory is fading and I am too young for this) like first systems, approximate time frame, system management as well as engineering aspects start ups, people, etc.  I would like to focus on that, as opposed to a Marconi display, too much WWII, or something.  And I especially need info on early weasel support so we have something to get people's attention and not bore them.

“Most Radiant and Radiated Dixie Crow Awards”

A significant part of EW is about radiating someone or getting radiated.  So the Dixie Crows are trying again with the EW "Most Radiant" and "Most Radiated" Awards to be presented at the Symposium in March.

The "Most Radiant" award is for the person who you feel is the most radiant in any interpretation of the word, visual radiance and/or that radiance that comes from within.  Last year's winner was a great example of both.

The "Most Radiated" award is for the person you think must have been the recipient of the most accidental radiation in a lab or something, again whether visually affected or mentally affected.  Last year's winner was a great example of both.

Nomination and voting is simple.  There are envelopes at the visitor desk in building 231 (FMS).  One penny is one vote. (We take cash or check and will consider credit card for the right amount.)  If the name you want is on an envelope there, just put money in.  If not, write "Radiated" or "Radiant" and the name on a blank envelope and put some money in it.  Consider nominating someone who may never win an award otherwise.  Money is collected daily until about March 12th and goes directly into the scholarship fund.  Leader order (not amount) will be posted a couple of times a week.

This is meant to be kept light and fun.  Please stop by and vote sometime, if only to drop in your change for the day.
