Presidents Corner - August 2010

We Need Your Help

It is becoming more and more costly to send out the Dixie Doodles via the US Postal Service. In order to cut operating expenses we would like to stop all hard copy mailing of the news letter unless that is the only way that you can receive the monthly issue. Starting with the October issue of the Dixie Doodles, unless we are notified by you, we will only be sending out the electronic version of the news letter. If you wish to continue receiving the news letter through the mail make sure we have your current mailing address on file including the complete 9 digit zip code.

Membership Drawing

For the $325 membership drawing, Joseph Wing and Dave Kendall were drawn but neither was in attendance. Karl Zack and Don Lizotte were not present to collect the $25 consolation prize so the Scholarship Fund received a $25 donation from the Crows.

Dayle Parker won Volume III History of EW donated by ITT. Thanks ITT.

The Dixie Crows are Chapter of the Year!!!

Congratulations are in order once again to Lisa Frugé and all the Dixie Crows for having tied with the Capitol Club to win Chapter of the Year honors. The Dixie Crows were also the overall winner for the Chapter Increase Award.

The award will be presented at the Chapter Presidents’ meeting at the Annual AOC Convention which will be held in Atlanta on Tuesday, 5 October 2010, at 1:00 p.m. Let’s all give Lisa a big round of applause for working so hard to achieve her goals for the Dixie Crow Chapter and thanks to all of you that made our last membership drive so successful.

Habitat for Humanity

Saturday, 7 Aug 2010 the Dixie Crow Chapter of the AOC teamed up with the local Habitat for Humanity of Warner Robins, GA in a "Build" Day at their 44th house located at, 132 Orchard Way. The Crows provided lunch for approximately 30 workers as we have done several times over the past 9 years with the guidance of our own "Chef Roadkill" Mark Leslein. Mark changed up the menu yet again to "beat the heat" by organizing a cool deli sandwich line with Cole slaw, potato salad, veggie tray and homemade brownies for dessert. Thanks to the following volunteers for making this event a success: Bob & Mary Thrower, Marsha Leslein, Jim Hundley, Greg Carter, Wayne and Allison Smith, Mark Swann, Dwayne Ferguson and Lisa Frugé.

Dixie Crow Chapter Inducts Several into AOC Technology Hall of Fame

The Dixie Crow Chapter is very proud to induct six (6) of its finest into the AOC Technology Hall of Fame this year from Robins AFB.

Enrique León

Mr. León has 28 years of EW experience ranging from EW simulation systems to producing, fielding, and sustaining multiple EW systems such as the ALQ-184, ALE-50, and AAR-47. Mr. León was a force in the design and development of the ALE-50 working closely with the Naval Research Labs during the program’s inception. He later led the fielding of the system on USAF platform such as the ALQ-184 and the F-16. Over his ten (10) years as lead engineer for the ALQ-184 EA pod, he led the development, production, fielding, sustainment, and modification of 893 pods and 60 Intermediate level testers at 38 user locations. His study of MWS capabilities for airlift aircraft led to the installation of the AAR-47 missile warning system on the C-5, C-17, and C-130 vastly improving aircrew survivability.

Suzanne Mason

Ms. Mason has approximately 30 years of EW experience. She has been at the forefront of the development, fielding, and sustainment of the ALQ-131 Electronic Attack (EA) pod. Her efforts led to the first Government implementation and fielding of changes to the operational flight software for the ALQ-131. For approximately the last 12 years she has been the force behind EW systems integration on AFSOC platforms. Without her tireless efforts the highly successful integration of the federated EW systems on the MH-53 with off-board Intel and mission planning systems would not have occurred.

H. Douglas Nation

Doug Nation began his EW career in 1980 as a test engineer at Eglin AFB, FL. His initial efforts focused on the ALQ-119 Lens Array system and the Belgian RAPPORT III internal ECM system in their F-16 aircraft. Mr. Nation served for several years as the EW Test Division's technical advisor with responsibility for DT&E of developmental bomber and fighter defensive and offensive EW systems. Later, he became director of the Combined Test Force for the TR-1 Precision Location Strike System (PLSS). As technical advisor of the Operations Group within the 46th Test Wing, he oversaw all DT&E of munitions, EW, and communications systems. He served in the Pentagon on OSD's DT&E staff with purview over the Department's MRTFB. Doug served

2 tours as principle Air Force analyst on OSD-led RDAT&E technical facilities teams during 1995 and 2005 BRAC. Mr. Nation is currently the chief engineer for the 542 Combat Sustainment Group for EW at Robins AFB, GA.

Jackie Ringley

Mr. Jackie Ringley has more than 39 years of experience as an EW engineer and has been a Dixie Crow member since 1975. EW career started in 1970 as design and systems engineer for Navy EA-6B AWG-21 fire control system, QRC effort fielded in 9 months; WR lead engineer from 1975-1980 for ALQ-119, ALQ-119 Compass Tie, USM-464, QRC 80-01, ALQ-184.

U-2 EW engineer from 1980-1985 developing, producing and fielding classified EW, technical advisor to ASC for SR-71 EW; 1986-1998 chief engineer to vice president general manager responsible for multiple AF & Navy, EW projects; 1998-2001 JSTARS avionics engineer; 2001-2009 lead engineer for 4 ALQ-161 ACAT III programs completing design test and production contract award on schedule as well as ALQ-161 HW & SW sustainment efforts.

Larry Sheets

Mr. Sheets has over 32 years of EW experience and has been a leader in Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) technology from the early days of the ALR-46 and the inception of the ALR-69. Over the last 20 years, he had been a major contributor to the AFSOC mission through his superior leadership in the integration of RWRs such as the ALR-69/APR-46, missile warning systems (MWS) such as the AAR-44/AAR-47, chaff/flare dispensers such as the ALE-40/ALE-47, off-board Intel, and mission planning tools.

Steve Strawn

Mr. Strawn has over 32 years of EW experience and has been the driving force behind RWR technology development and implementation since the timeframe of the ALR-46. His knowledge and skill led to the sustainment and fielding of the ALR-69 and later resulted in the Class IV modification of the ALR-69, a wide-ranging capability improvement for the user. Over approximately the last ten (10) years, Mr. Strawn has led the design, development, testing, and fielding of the state-of-the-art ALR-69A, a digital receiver technology RWR poised to make major improvements to aircrew situational awareness.
